Dr. Robert Okin is a nationally known figure in public psychiatry and has spent his professional life developing programs for people with mental illness.  He served three Governors as Commissioner of Mental Health for the states of Vermont and Massachusetts and was Chief of Psychiatry at San Francisco General Hospital for 17 years until January 2009.   In addition he has had a long tenure as Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at UCSF School of Medicine where he has taught classes of young psychiatric residents about clinical interviewing and public policy.  He has also served as an expert consultant with Mental Disability Rights International, examining and critiquing the mental health systems in over 10 countries, where he has advocated for the human rights of mentally ill people.

Okin is now fulfilling a dream to write a book that seeks to increase public understanding of people dealing with life's misfortunes - in their homes, in hospitals, in jails, on the streets.  The book consists of photographs along with personal narratives in the voices of the subjects themselves.  As these materials convey so evocatively, it is clear that all of us are spun from the same fiber, cut from the same cloth. It is our human bond, the stuff beneath, that is the subject of this book, CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH.
